Cimmerian Bosporos

Pantikapaion, AE13 200-150 BC

Obverse: head of a bull facing three-quarters to right

Reverse: grain ear above plow right, ΠAN around

Weight 1.89 g

The minting of the Pantikapaion located in the Crimea - the strongest Greek center of this area in the classical and Hellenistic period, went through from the 4th to the 2nd century BC, significant changes in weight systems and coin style, manifested, among others, by the coexistence of coins at that time with the image of an elderly bearded gentleman and a beardless groom. The dating of the offered coin for the first 20-30 years of the 3rd century BC is quite certain thanks to the findings of archaeologists (including Prof. M. Mielczarek) analyzing the structure of the treasures of this type of coins.
