Issue commemorating the first postage stamp in the world, the so-called Penny Black, issued in Great Britain in 1840, the offered medal was issued to mark the 125th anniversary of the stamp's issue.

Penny Black was the world's first self-adhesive postage stamp used in a public postal system. It was first issued in Britain on May 1, 1840, but was not valid for use until May 6. It shows the profile of Queen Victoria.
