Lot description
Grade: VF+
Reference: Crawford 350A/2, Sydenham 723

Non-centrically minted, but a nice patina and a little fresh gloss in the nooks and crannies, very nice appearance.

Roman Republic

C. Gargonius Cicero, Ogulnius, M. Vergilius, Denarius 86 BC, Rome mint

Obverse: head of Apollo right

Reverse: Jupiter in quadriga to right, holding reins and thunderbolt

Weight 3.69 g

The denarius offered, by many is called anonymous, but despite the lack of even a short form of the names of monetary officials, it is only formally anonymous, because stylistically very similar analogies with an identical iconographic scheme clearly indicate the monetary triumvirs of 86 BC. C. Gargonius was the orator mentioned by Cicero (Brutus 180), M. Vergilius was probably a people's tribune in 87 BC, and nothing is known about Ogulnius.
