Rare denarius of little-known Caesar.

Maximus as Caesar (235-238, son of Maximianus), Denarius 236-238, Rome mint

Obverse: bare-headed and draped bust of Maximus to right

IVL VERVS MAXIMVS CAES

Reverse: Lituus, knife, jug, simpulum and sprinkler

PIETAS AVG

Weight 3.03 g

Young son of Maximinus who was proclaimed Caesar at the same time his father was hailed as Augustus immediately after the murders of Severus Alexander and his mother. Both were killed in a mutiny prior to a battle with the forces of Pupienus.
