Lot description Show orginal version
Grade: VF
Reference: RIC 7

Very rare denarius of Balbinus, one of the shortest reigning Emperors in Roman history. Balbinus was proclaimed emperor at the same time as Pupien, so that at the same time they both co-ruled the Empire. According to a new chronology compiled by A. Chastagnol and M. Christol, between the end of April and the beginning of May 238, there was a certain conflict between the two co-emperors, who were finally murdered by the praetorians.

Rough surface, signs of corrosion, but a nice detail.

Coin purchased in 2014 from Solidus Numismatik for 307 EUR.

Roman Empire, Balbinus (238), Denarius 238, Rome mint

Obverse: bust of the emperor facing right

Reverse: Providentia standing to the left, holding a wand over the globe and a cornucopia

PROVIDENTIA DEORVM

Diameter 19 mm, weight 1.69 g
