Obverse: head right

L AELIVS CAESAR

Reverse: Salus seated left, feeding the serpent above the altar, S-C across fields, SALVS in exerque

Diameter 30 mm, weight 21.87 g


Aelius was the adopted son of Emperor Hadrian. He was elevated to the dignity of Caesar by him and was expected to be a successor, but unfortunately he died a few months before Hadrian. He is entitled L AELIVS CAESAR on his coins and is depicted with an uncovered head, curly hair, a beard, and a majestic face.
