The city of Carthage was founded by Phoenician colonists from Tire in the eighth century B.C., in northern Africa, in the area later called Zeugitania. Carthage's great geographic location and effective policies quickly made Carthage a maritime and commercial power. The struggle for influence in the regions of the western Mediterranean basin led to a long-lasting conflict with Rome.
