At the time of the minting of gold coins by the Hanseatic cities, Prussia was the dominant power in Europe and boasted the greatest amount of wealth. Free City of Hamburg minted the smallest amount of gold coins among all the cities of the Hanseatic League, making them rarer than issues from other provinces.
