The outbreak of World War I caused a shortage of petty currency. For this reason, in the years 1914-1918, the Gdańsk Magistrate issued banknotes from 10 pfennigs to 20 marks. The Free City of Gdańsk introduced inflation mark notes (1919-23) and more stable guilders (1923-1939). The guilder currency was in force until 1939, when Gdańsk was incorporated into Germany during World War II.
